OUR STORY The problem...
Child abuse, abandonment, and neglect span every socioeconomic, ethnic, and occupation from technical and service sector workers to business executives.

The statistics are grim:

  • In the United States in 2003 1,177 children died from child abuse or neglect (this comes out to 3 children a day).

  • Between 70% and 90% of child abuse cases are related to alcohol and drug abuse.

  • Children in a family with domestic violence are eight times more likely to be sexually abused.

  • Over the last two decades, sexual abuse incidents have increased 750% nationwide, an even more alarming statistic considering that 80% of sexual abuse cases are never reported.

The Valley of the Moon Children’s Home is a division of the Sonoma County Human Serviced Department. It therefore must compete for public funds with all other county services. Recently, completion of Phase I and II of the new Valley of the Moon Children’s Home was realized. Through the public and private partnership of Sonoma County and Valley of the Moon Children’s Foundation, all monies raised will assure the completion of Phase III of the home. This will include the Redwood Children’s Center (interview area for suspected sexual abuse), a Medical and Dental Wing, Toddlers Area, Consulting Rooms, and a Family Visitation Area.
